When Henry Kissinger would prepare for negotiations, he acknowledged that the other side had to achieve some benefit in an agreement or else an agreement would never come to pass.  Embedded in this is a respect that the things important to the other side are just as important as our own interests are to us. The key was to find a solution in which both sides benefit. To get there, one must understand and appreciate what the other side’s issues and concerns are.
